In Ju Ting's huge etchings, nude women interweave with each other in silence, their faces are vague but the sense of sorrow & coldness is perceivable in the darkness. In classical oil paintings and later in modern photographs, the nude female is consistently depicted as "appearing", as though she is aware of being looked at by man. "Men act and women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at." (John Berger, Ways of Seeing, 1972) Ju Ting's focus on female standpoint is unique, revealing women's mysterious unconsciousness, especially with the medium of etching. |
