Chinese
print art has its roots in Lu Xun's new woodcut movement
of the 1930's, and since that time it has continued to grow
and strengthen through the struggles of the people. Oil painting,
printmaking and sculpture are the three methods of art that
China has imported from the West. Because of its convenient
materials, adaptability and strong militant tones, print art
has become the most rooted of these mediums. The works featured
in this exhibition at the DuMei Gallery are mostly from the
early revolutionary period. Due to the special nature of that
period and the state of the cultural market, many works were
collected by museums, and few are floating on the market, making
these early original prints especially precious.
The makers of these prints were all highly accomplished artists
of the time. Looking back now, their works embody the creative
style of the time: plain and natural woodcutting, a pursuit
of creative, true-to-life expressions, sincere emotions and
a passion for nature and real life. "Ever Moving Forward"
is the creative state in which these pioneers of Chinese printmaking
worked, and the direction they always pursued. Many of the artists
are in their old age or have even passed away, but the sincere
reflection on reality that is expressed in their work is an
achievement that many young artists would have trouble attaining.
At a time when the visual feast of contemporary art seems daunting
and inaccessible to much of the general public, this joint exhibition
of accomplished artists from the New China takes us back to
our roots and shows us the value of these old prints in a new
era. |
